Half guard is the position in which only one of the opponent's legs is trapped. If your upper body is locked up, the position is somewhat advantageous to your opponent, making it easier for them to pass your guard or apply submissions. Therefore, we use bridges, shrimps, and leg hooks to create space and position yourself to be able to fight back against the opponent. From there, you can use techniques such as transitioning to the closed guard, applying sweeps, or taking the back.
