Sitting guard is a guard that controls the opponent with the upper body up and the buttocks touching the floor. It is also called the butterfly guard because the bent knees look like the wings of a butterfly. It is an effective position for applying a sweep. You can sweep the opponent to either side with your toe hook. You can also break the opponent down to all fours for taking the back, or choking him/her.
